Bio
Victor Mhleli Ntoni was a highly respected South African jazz musician, celebrated for his exceptional skill as a bassist, composer, and arranger. Born on June 21, 1947, in Langa, Cape Town, Ntoni's musical roots were nurtured at home by his mother, a local singer, and his uncle, an aspiring pianist. Victor Ntoni established himself early on, playing with McCoy Mrubata in The Uptown Sextet as a teenager. His professional career quickly gained momentum on the international stage. In 1975, he served as the musical director for the musical Meropa, leading the production on a European tour. Ntoni’s artistry extended beyond performance; he became known for creating music that told South Africa’s story. From composing pieces that celebrated freedom and resilience to directing stage productions like Meropa, his work carried deep cultural meaning. He later co-founded the group Afro Cool Concept.
