Angélique Kidjo is a five-time Grammy Award-winning singer, songwriter, and activist, celebrated as one of Africa’s most influential musical voices. Her honors include the Polar Music Prize (2023), Time magazine’s TIME100 list (2021), the BBC 100 Women's list (2020), and France’s Legion of Honour (2021). She is among the first African artists to receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Kidjo is a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador and founded the Batonga Foundation.
Born Angélique Kpasseloko Hinto Hounsinou Kandjo Manta Zogbin Kidjo in Ouidah, Benin, she grew up in a creative family. Performing with her mother’s theatre troupe as a child and joining her school band Les Sphinx. Political unrest led her to Paris in 1983, where she studied jazz, collaborated with European musicians, and joined Pili Pili. Her notable albums include Parakou (1989), Logozo (1991), Djin Djin (2007), Eve (2014), Remain in Light (2018), Celia (2019), and Mother Nature (2021).
