Oliver "Tuku" Mtukudzi (1952–2019) was a legendary Zimbabwean singer, guitarist, and human rights activist. Over a forty-year career, he released 67 albums, developing a unique genre known as "Tuku Music." This signature sound blended Zimbabwean Jit and Mbira rhythms with soulful Afro-jazz, characterized by his distinctively raspy voice and masterful acoustic guitar.
Beyond entertainment, Tuku was a powerful social commentator. He used metaphors and Shona proverbs to address sensitive issues like HIV/AIDS awareness in the hit "Todii" and women’s inheritance rights in the film and song "Neria." Though he avoided direct partisan politics, his lyrics often mirrored the nation’s struggles for justice and leadership reform. A UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador and founder of the Pakare Paye Arts Centre, Tuku dedicated his life to mentoring young talent. Upon his death, he became the first musician declared a National Hero in Zimbabwe.
