Born in the mid-1950s to an affluent family in Aswan, Egypt; graduated from the Faculty of Applied Arts; and served in the Egyptian military in the mid-1970s; Mounir began his musical career while he was at the University. Mounir has released over twenty albums, soundtrack for nine movies, and acted in seven other films and television series.

As a player of the Ngurumi, a two-string plucked instrument, he gained popularity in his homeland.
