He was also a member of the Makgona Tsohle Band, providing musical support for Mahlathini and the Mahotella Queens. West Nkosi played a role in producing all international releases for the two bands between 1986 and 1991. Early in his music career, West Nkosi played the penny whistle, a lead instrument in South African pop style. Later, he transitioned to the alto saxophone. He played a significant role in shaping the Sax Jive and Mbaqanga styles, earning recognition as one of the influential figures who brought South African music to the global stage.
