Black Moses, the stage name of Moses Ngwenya, is a South African keyboardist, composer, and bandleader closely linked to mbaqanga music.
Born in South Africa and raised in Soweto, he began his career in the early 1970s as a keyboardist for various groups, including the Groovy Boys.
A pivotal moment came when he co-founded Soul Brothers, which grew into one of South Africa’s most successful mbaqanga bands, recording over forty-five albums and reaching audiences across the country and neighboring regions.
Ngwenya also pursued a solo career, producing the “M” series of albums, starting with "M1" and continuing with "M2" (1988), featuring tracks like “Marakalas”.
His decades-long contributions to South African music and his role in preserving mbaqanga were recognized in 2020, when he received an Honorary Doctorate in Philosophy from the University of South Africa, solidifying his legacy as a pioneering musician and cultural ambassador.
