Jah Woosh began his music career in the 1970s, recording his first single "Angela Davis" in 1973. He was known for his conscious lyrics and unique DJ style, which earned him the nickname "The Deejay Commander." Jah Woosh released numerous albums and collaborated with many other reggae artists throughout his career. Jah Woosh died in 2011.

    Saadatu Aliyu, popularly known as Barmani Choge, was a renowned Hausa female singer from Nigeria. Born in Funtua, Katsina State, she had no formal education and got married at a young age. Despite societal constraints and patriarchy, Barmani rose to prominence with her daring music, often considered feminist and sometimes racy. Her music, which was mostly composed in the Amada genre, focused on women's emancipation, encouraging them to take up trades and criticizing those who refused to better their economic status. She also sang about her opposition to polygamy and celebrated motherhood in her song "Gwanne Ikon Allah." Barmani had a successful musical career for over 52 years and was considered the sole proprietress of the Amada music genre. She passed away on March 2, 2013.

    The Ethiopians was founded by Leonard Dillon (9 December 1942 – 28 September 2011) with Stephen "Tough Cock" Taylor and Aston "Charlie" Morrison at the tail end of the ska period. Dillon was a stonemason from the small community of Boundbrook, located on the outskirts of the northeast coastal town of Port Antonio, where he was raised by his grandparents in a strict Seventh Day Adventist household. With his grandfather the choirmaster in the local church, Dillon had good grounding in music from an early age. While still attending high school, he performed with a local act known as the Playboys (later re-named Ray and the Gladiators), the mellifluousness of his voice bringing the nickname "Sparrow"
