Damini Ebunoluwa Ogulu, known as Burna Boy, was born in Port Harcourt, Nigeria, into a family connected to the country’s musical heritage. His grandfather, Benson Idonije, managed Afrobeat pioneer Fela Kuti, influencing Burna Boy’s early interest in music.
After experimenting with digital production and studying in the UK, he returned to Nigeria and began working with producer LeriQ. Their 2012 collaboration “Like to Party” introduced him to a wider audience and preceded his 2013 debut album, "L.I.F.E.," which drew from reggae, dancehall and Nigerian popular music.
His international profile grew through projects including "On a Spaceship" and "Outside." "African Giant" (2019) explored African identity and social issues, earning his first Grammy nomination. "Twice as Tall" won Best Global Music Album at the 63rd Grammy Awards.
He followed with "Love, Damini," "I Told Them...," and "No Sign of Weakness," expanding his global catalogue while maintaining strong connections to his Nigerian roots and musical heritage.
