Ebenezer Remilekun Aremu Olasupo Obey-Fabiyi, known as Ebenezer Obey, is a Nigerian composer, guitarist, vocalist, bandleader, and evangelist who played a major role in shaping modern jùjú music. Born in Idogo, Ogun State, he drew inspiration from Yoruba traditions, oral history, and cultural practices that later influenced his songwriting. After moving to Lagos, he trained under jùjú pioneer Fatai Rolling-Dollar before forming The International Brothers in 1964, later renamed The Inter-Reformers Band.
Obey expanded jùjú through detailed guitar arrangements, indigenous percussion, and the development of the Miliki style. His songs combined Yoruba proverbs, social observations, spirituality, and moral lessons. With over one hundred albums, including “Olomi Gbo Temi,” “Current Affairs,” and “Vanity,” he became one of Nigeria’s most prolific recording artists. His later Christian ministry further shaped his music, leaving a lasting legacy in African music history.
