Bio
Enoch Mankayi Sontonga, was a renowned South African composer, who wrote the iconic "Nkosi Sikelel' iAfrika" (God Bless Africa). Originally a hymn composed for his choir at the Ohlange Institute in Durban when he was 24, the song swiftly gained popularity and spread to other choirs and schools. Eventually, it became a vital part of South Africa's national anthem and a symbol of anti-apartheid resistance. Beyond composing, Enoch was an influential educator, shaping African choir traditions. Tragically, he passed away at 32. His burial site received national monument status on September 24, 1996, celebrated as Heritage Day in South Africa. Enoch's legacy endures, reflecting his profound impact on music and culture, a testament to his enduring contribution.
