Evaristo Netensibe Muyinda was a master Ugandan musician, educator, and cultural custodian who preserved and globalized Buganda’s royal xylophone traditions through performance, teaching, and innovation. Born in Nabbale, Kyaggwe, Muyinda began playing the akadinda at age nine and joined the Kabaka’s ensemble in 1939 during Mutesa II’s reign. In 1948, he became a key figure at the Uganda Museum, linking Buganda’s court music with international ethnomusicologists. He developed a practical notation system for amadinda and akadinda, now central to East African music studies. Muyinda founded the Kiganda Orchestra, expanding the scope of traditional ensemble performance, and mentored many, including his daughter Maria Frances Nannemba Muyinda. His performances feature in Traditional Music of the Baganda, The King’s Musicians, and Buganda Royal Music Revival, with his handmade instruments held in European museums. He taught at Gayaza Girls and the Uganda Museum, toured globally, and remained active until his death in October 1993.
