He dropped out of school to pursue a music career, joining Mike Ejeagha's band and later forming his own band, Celestine Ukwu & His Music Royals of Nigeria.
In 1966, he formed another band, Celestine Ukwu & His Philosophers, which was known for the critically acclaimed song "Igede Fantasia."
