Bio
Born in 1961, in Soweto, South Africa, Freddie Gwala is a celebrated musician and the creator of the "Zumba" music genre. His musical journey began in 1973 when he formed the group Pure Gold with his brothers, and later co-founded Platform One. His career was not without setbacks; a decade in prison for car theft in the 1980s proved to be a turning point, with Gwala crediting music for turning his life around. Gwala began a successful solo career in the 1990s after his release, and his famous song "Amadamara" was the foundation of his Zumba style, which mixed disco and soul, and cemented his legacy. His influence extends beyond his own discography; he has collaborated with other major South African artists, including the late Brenda Fassie.
