Gé Korsten (1927–1999) was a transformative figure in South African culture, bridging the gap between classical opera and popular Afrikaans music. Born in the Netherlands, he immigrated to South Africa as a child and initially worked as an electrician before his vocal talent led him to the stage. Over a career spanning four decades, Korsten performed in thousands of operas and became a cinematic icon through films like Hoor My Lied.
His signature song, "Liefling," remains a cultural anthem in South Africa. Beyond performing, he served as the Managing Director of the Cape Performing Arts Board, shaping the country’s artistic landscape. Despite his massive success and polished public image, Korsten battled significant health challenges in his later years. He passed away in 1999, leaving behind a legacy of vocal excellence that set the standard for generations of Afrikaans performers.
