Bio
Born in Masaka in 1958, Herman Basudde rose from hardship to become Uganda’s most revered kadongo kamu storyteller. Gifted a guitar by a WWII veteran, he taught himself, first performing in churches. Fame came with Mukyala Mugerwa in 1986, followed by bold, socially charged hits tackling love, AIDS, and injustice. Wrongfully jailed and later exiled during regional unrest, he re-emerged in Kampala under Livingstone Kasozi before forming Kabuladda Professional Singers with his wife. Known for his raspy voice and sharp lyricism, he challenged exploitation in songs like Enimiro y’okubuganga. Honored nationally, Basudde tragically died in a 1997 car crash. His music, prophetic and unflinching, still echoes through Uganda’s cultural memory, his dry guitar buried by his side, as he wished.
