Bio
Jabu Khanyile was a legendary South African musician and the frontman of the Afro-fusion band Bayete. Born in Soweto in 1957, he overcame a difficult childhood to become a global ambassador for African culture. Khanyile was iconic for his traditional attire and fly-whisk, symbolizing his pride in his roots. He rose to fame after joining Bayete in 1984, eventually becoming the lead vocalist and transforming the group’s sound into a sophisticated blend of jazz, reggae, and traditional rhythms. His breakthrough solo success came with the album "Mmalo-We," which earned him international acclaim. Throughout his career, he released celebrated works like "Africa Unite" and "Thobekile." A multi-Kora Award winner, Khanyile collaborated with legends such as Youssou N’Dour and Papa Wemba. He remained a dedicated cultural activist until his passing in 2006, leaving behind a legacy of musical excellence and a profound commitment to African unity.
