Steven Omodele Bankole Rhodes, known as Steve Rhodes, was a prolific Nigerian musician, singer, composer, and band leader Steve Rhodes Orchestra. Rhodes' introduction to music started at a very young age and continued when he met a German music instructor who took him under his wing while in college in the UK. After playing in Germany for a while, Rhodes returned to Nigeria and took on a career in broadcasting, but never forgot his first love, music. After organizing successful concerts as a broadcaster, Rhodes left and took on music full-time with his band, Steve Rhodes Orchestra. He was also a manager to Fela Kuti. Rhodes was quite influential in the Nigerian music scene in the 60s and 70s. He passed away on May 29, 2008.

Mélomé Clément was a highly influential Beninese musician and the conductor and saxophonist of the Orchestre Poly-Rhythmo. Clément started his career in 1968 with the Orchestre Poly-Rhythmo and managed to keep the group's flame alive, though it went under for a period and returned in 2009. He and his band was able to bring their stunning combination of funk, soul, voodoo rhythms, and Afrobeat to the world stages. Mélomé Clément passed away at the age of 67 following a heart attack.

Mose Se Sengo, known affectionately as Fanfan, was a legendary Congolese rumba musician, guitarist, composer, and bandleader. His journey in shaping Congolese Soukous began as a teenage guitarist, and he later contributed his talents to bands such as the Jazz Barons and Orchestre Revolution. Under the mentorship of the late Congolese rumba maestro Franco Luambo Makiadi, Fanfan emerged on the music scene in 1968. He continued to leave his mark through his involvement with Lovy du Zaire and the formation of his band, Somo Somo, in the late 1970s. Despite his impactful contributions, his life was tragically cut short in 2019.

In 1983, he launched his music career with Mountain Records, debuting with "Skoppensboer." He has also collaborated with renowned artists like Dutch singer Herman van Veen. Throughout his career, he's produced nearly 20 albums, earning prestigious recognition like three SAMA awards, two VONK awards, a Geraas award for songwriting excellence, and the Centenary Medal of Honor from the South African Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2009. Notably, in his repertoire, he serves as a patron for MES, an organization dedicated to aiding homeless and street children in Johannesburg.

Awalom Gebremaria is an Eritrean singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist. According to Awalom, his musical influences were from Bob Marley, Yemane Barya, and well-known Eritrean singer, Abraham Aferewerki. While in his country, Awalom learned to play the Wata and the Krar, two important Eritrean musical instruments, and in 2007, he completed his debut and only album, Desdes. Shortly, he emigrated to the United States and never got to know how well his debut album did in his home country.

Moussa Doumbia was a Malian saxophonist, arranger, and author/composer who drew inspiration from African American funk in the 1970s. His music was an audacious blend of funk and African rhythms that he sang mostly in Dioula, his native language. As a disciplined professional, Doumbia gained his footing in the industry with the help of French-American producers Cathy and Albert Loudes. His music was groundbreaking in West Africa, but unfortunately, it didn't gain popularity until the late 1990s, long after his death.
