Bio
Jonas Mosa Gwangwa’s name stands tall in the story of South African music. Born in Orlando East, Soweto, he became a powerful force in jazz, known for his skill as a trombonist, composer, and leader. His career took shape in the 1950s when he joined the groundbreaking Jazz Epistles with Hugh Masekela, Abdullah Ibrahim, and Kippie Moeketsi, blending African rhythm with global jazz influence. When apartheid forced many artists into exile, Gwangwa turned his music into a voice for resistance. As director of the Amandla Cultural Ensemble, he travelled the world spreading messages of hope and freedom through performance. His work on the film Cry Freedom gained him global recognition and respect. After returning to South Africa, he continued creating, mentoring, and inspiring new talent. Awarded the Order of Ikhamanga in Gold, Gwangwa’s legacy endures as a symbol of resilience and musical brilliance.
