Khaya Mahlangu is a South African saxophonist, composer, and arranger whose career spans more than four decades within the country’s jazz and Afro-fusion traditions. Born in Soweto in 1954, he developed early musical skills through youth programs led by Khabi Mngoma and initially trained on trumpet before transitioning to saxophone, which became his primary instrument.
Mahlangu’s early professional activity included performances in township bands and membership in Harari, followed by work in club circuits during the 1970s. In 1980, he joined Spirits Rejoice, a jazz-fusion ensemble that contributed to the development of modern South African jazz forms.
In 1981, he co-founded Sakhile with Sipho Gumede, producing multiple recordings and undertaking international tours across Europe and Southern Africa. His work within Sakhile established him as a contributor to Afro-fusion, integrating jazz structures with indigenous musical elements.
