Bio
For Lee “Scratch” Perry, the recording studio was never simply a room filled with equipment. Born Rainford Hugh Perry in rural Jamaica, he moved to Kingston in the early 1960s and began working at Studio One before creating Upsetter Records and forming the Upsetters. In 1973, Black Ark Studio became the centre of his experiments with tape, echoes and rhythm tracks. Perry’s restless approach produced landmark albums including "Super Ape," "War Ina Babylon," and "Police and Thieves." His production work with Bob Marley and the Wailers, Max Romeo and Junior Murvin expanded his influence. When fire destroyed Black Ark in 1983, Perry’s creative life continued across international recording sessions. His unconventional production later reached beyond reggae, influencing The Clash, the Beastie Boys, hip-hop and electronic music. He received five Grammy nominations and won for "Jamaican E.T." in 2003. Perry died in 2021, aged 85, leaving behind a lasting legacy of studio experimentation.
