Born in Soweto, Letta Mbulu built a career spanning over six decades, shaped by apartheid-era realities. As a teenager, she performed with the Swanky Spots and appeared in “King Kong,” laying an early foundation. In 1964, she relocated to the United States, joining exiled figures like Miriam Makeba and Hugh Masekela, and later worked with Harry Belafonte, gaining international recognition after her 1967 debut.
Her catalogue moves through jazz, soul, and pop, with albums like “Free Soul” and “Naturally.” Her honours include the Lifetime Achievement Award at the SAMA (2001), the Order of Ikhamanga in Silver (2009), and an honorary doctorate from Nelson Mandela University (2025).
Her marriage to fellow musician Caiphus Semenya also shaped her journey.
Beyond her music, Mbulu is a respected activist using her platform to speak against injustice and was a founding member of the South African Artists United (SAAU), an organization mobilizing artists in the fight against apartheid.
