Bio
Louis Mhlanga (born November 10, 1956, in Mbare, Harare, Zimbabwe) is a renowned guitarist, singer, and producer whose career began in the 1970s. A self-taught musician from age 10, he fused jazz, rock, and Shona mbira rhythms into a signature sound. He performed with bands like Ilanga, Talking Drum, and Mudzimu, and worked with Oliver Mtukudzi, Thomas Mapfumo, Hugh Masekela, and Vusi Mahlasela. His 1999 collaboration "Live at the Bassline" and 2001 album "Shamwari" featuring “Distant Lover” earned regional acclaim. Mhlanga also produced for major artists, taught African guitar at the Royal Dutch Conservatory, and directed Zimbabwe’s Ethnomusicology Trust. Known for his melodic guitar tone and cross-cultural sound, he remains one of southern Africa’s most respected musicians, maintaining strong ties to Zimbabwe despite an international career.
