Oupa Mafokate, professionally known as Makhendlas, was a South African kwaito singer and songwriter who became one of the early stars of the kwaito movement during the 1990s. Born on 22 December 1970 in Chiawelo, Soweto, he rose to prominence through his energetic music and charismatic stage presence. He was also the younger brother of renowned kwaito pioneer Arthur Mafokate.
Makhendlas built his career under the 999 Records label and became known for hit songs such as "Iminwe," "O Skatata," and "Lefatshe Lee Kela Makhendlas." His music helped popularize kwaito and brought township culture to a wider South African audience. His 1997 project "Jwaleng" produced tracks that resonated with fans across the country.
Despite his success, his life ended tragically in October 1998 at the age of 27. Although his career was brief, Makhendlas remains remembered as one of the figures who helped establish kwaito as a major South African music genre.
