Malang Omar Gassam, known professionally as Malando Gassama, was a renowned Gambian percussionist celebrated for his significant contributions to jazz, pop, and funk music. Born on February 7, 1946, in Bakoteh, a district within the bustling city of Serekunda, The Gambia, Gassama gained recognition for his exceptional skill with percussion instruments. Gassama's versatility and talent made him a sought-after global musician in the 1970s and 1980s. He was a member of The Super Eagles, a pioneering band from The Gambia. Gassama collaborated with notable musicians and groups, including ABBA, Al Jarreau, and Mick Jagger. Gassama spent much of his professional life in Sweden and the USA. Malando Gassama died in Banjul, The Gambia on January 25, 1999, following an asthma attack.
