Bio
Rooted in Mali's rich griot heritage, Mamadou Diabaté, born in Kita in 1975, is a kora maestro who exemplifies the spirit of West African music. He learned the 21-stringed kora from his father, Djelimory Diabaté, an acclaimed member of the Instrumental Ensemble of Mali. Despite his mother’s attempts to steer him towards academics, Mamadou’s devotion to music was unwavering. By age 15, he was a regional sensation, performing at weddings and cultural gatherings. Relocating to New York City in 1996, he collaborated with jazz greats like Randy Weston and Donald Byrd. His Grammy-winning "Douga Mansa" (2010) and debut album "Tunga" (2000) showcase a seamless blend of Malian traditions and jazz innovation.
