Mathys Roets is a legendary South African Baritone singer-songwriter, performer, and member of the trio band Drie Van Die Bestes. Starting out as a street performer in the late 1980s, he rose to national attention after a defining performance at the 1996 KKNK festival. Roets became a key figure in the Afrikaans music industry, widely respected for his interpretations of Koos du Plessis and international names like Leonard Cohen.
In 2009, a motorcycle accident changed his life, leaving him paralyzed from the waist down. Rather than step away, he returned to the stage in a wheelchair and continued performing with the same depth and presence that earned him recognition in the first place. His journey has also led him to speak openly about disability and inclusion.
Today, Roets remains a respected figure in South African folk music, with a career that reflects consistency, endurance, and a lasting connection to his audience.
