Bio
Mongezi Feza was a trumpeter and jazz flautist from South Africa. He was well known for his improvisations, which fused jazz with kwela rhythms and African music. Feza was born in Queenstown, an urban area in the Eastern Cape, and began playing the trumpet at a young age. After moving to the Eastern Cape with Tete Mbambisa, he made the trip to Cape Town to perform with other regional jazz musicians. He was there when renowned jazz pianist Chris McGregor approached him and invited him to join the Blue Notes, a jazz ensemble of which he was a member. Feza left the group in 1964 and went into exile.
