Bakanzo Monza, professionally known as Monza Premier (also credited as Monza 1er), is a Congolese musician, singer, composer, and bandleader, celebrated for his role in Soukous and Rumba Rock. Born in Congo-Brazzaville, he rose to prominence in the 1980s and 1990s, first within the Congolese music scene and later in France, developing a style that fused traditional rumba with electric-guitar-driven rock.
Monza gained recognition as a lead singer for Choc Stars before forming Les Stars Magnats, where he pioneered the “Rumba Rock” aesthetic, blending smooth rumba with faster Soukous rhythms. Key releases include the 1986 album "Fleur du Lac" and the track "Melina," highlighting his melodic tenor voice and intricate guitar arrangements.
He collaborated extensively in Congolese and Parisian African music scenes, including with Orchestre De La Voix Du Zaire, leaving a lasting legacy that bridges traditional rumba and modern instrumentation, cementing his place in Soukous and Rumba Rock history.
