Neels Mattheus was a South African Afrikaner traditional musician. Mattheus was a well-known traditional musician of the Boeremusiek type in South Africa. Throughout his multi-decade career, which included radio and television appearances, he garnered awards and honours. He was known for his virtuoso concertina playing and blended jazz with Boeremusiek to produce a dynamic, current sound while retaining Boeremusiek's beauty and soul. Mattheus established a great reputation for warmth and generosity as a frequent performer at festivals and dance venues in South Africa. Songs like the Groot Leeu Mazurka, Mooi Bly, and Gamtoos Opskud were popular among South Africans of all ages.
