Bio
Sonia Aletta Nel, professionally known as Nianell, is a Namibian‑born singer, songwriter, pianist, and guitarist based in South Africa. Born in Omaruru, Namibia, she grew up in Windhoek before pursuing formal music studies at Pretoria Technikon and further training in classical music at Trinity College London and the University of South Africa. Her debut album, "Who Painted the Moon?" released in 2002, quickly established her presence in the South African music scene; its title track became internationally known when covered by Hayley Westenra, contributing to over two million sales of the album "Pure." Nianell’s discography includes releases including "Angel Tongue," "Life’s Gift," "I Know I’m Lucky," "Sand & Water," "My Heart," and her 2024 EP "Love Is Home." She has won multiple awards, including South African Music Awards for Best English Contemporary Album and Best Female Songwriter, and performed internationally across Africa and Europe.
