Bio
Queen Salawa Abeni, born Salawa Abeni Alidu in Epe, Lagos State, Nigeria, is a Nigerian singer-songwriter and actress widely regarded as the pioneer of waka music. Raised in a traditional Yoruba environment, she had limited formal education but developed a passion for music early, performing at local events and gaining recognition for her voice. Her career began in the mid-1970s, and in 1976 she released her debut album, "Late General Murtala Ramat Mohammed," which sold over one million copies, making her the first female Yoruba artist to achieve this milestone. During the 1980s and 1990s, she released numerous albums, including "Gentle Lady," "Waka Carnival," "Experience," and "Good Morning in America," building a catalog of over 40 projects. She has collaborated with notable artists, including Ayinla Kollington. In 1992, the Alaafin of Oyo crowned her “Queen of Waka Music,” and she remains a cultural icon.
