A Tanzanian singer, composer, drummer, and performer, Saida Karoli is popularly known as Wanchekecha in Uganda, a nickname derived from one of her songs. Saida Karoli's music with lyrics in Kihaya (or Haya) and Kiswahili (or Swahili) has been described as "natural," with "mellow vocals and hypnotic rhythms." The themes are usually poverty, gender roles, and cultural identity, making her a prominent voice in Tanzanian music. Her big break in the music industry came with the release of her debut album, Chambua kama Karanga, with the evergreen hit single, Maria Salome. She has since released several albums and collaborated with other artists. Saida has received recognition for her works, with nominations at the Kora All-African Music Awards.
