Victor Efosa Uwaifo was born in Benin City, Edo State, Nigeria, and became one of the most influential figures in Nigerian highlife music. He began playing guitar in childhood and later studied graphics at Yaba College of Technology before pursuing music professionally. In 1965, he formed The Melody Maestros and achieved international recognition with “Joromi,” which became a major West African hit and earned one of the earliest gold disc recognitions in Africa.
Uwaifo’s notable recordings include “Joromi,” “Mami Water,” “Akwete,” “Egho,” and “Arabade.” He gained recognition for his innovative guitar techniques and for incorporating Edo musical traditions into modern highlife. Beyond music, he was a sculptor, painter, educator, and cultural administrator, serving as Commissioner for Arts, Culture and Tourism in Edo State. He received the national honor of Member of the Order of the Niger (MON) and remained active in music and the arts until he died in 2021.
