Steven De Groote was a classical pianist from South Africa. He was born in Johannesburg and attended the University of Cape Town to study piano. He was the first South African to win first place in the 1977 Van Cliburn International Piano Competition. De Groote went on to have a great career as a concert pianist, travelling the world to perform. He was noted for his technically outstanding playing and sensitive musical interpretations. He also extensively recorded, producing numerous recordings of solo piano work and concertos.
