Bio
Tony Williams Ssenkebejje (1944–2025) was Uganda’s iconic rhythm guitarist, bandleader, and composer. He began playing guitar at Lubiri Secondary School and co-founded The Cranes Band in 1965. In 1974, he married Rachael after meeting her during a Cranes performance. The couple moved to Kenya, where Tony performed with groups like Les Noir, The Spartans, and Mombasa Vikings, while Rachael sang with Simba Six. They returned to Uganda in the early 1990s and joined Afrigo Band. In 1993, they formed Simba Ngoma, and after a lineup change, they created Simba Sounds in 1994. Simba Sounds became a fixture at Kampala’s Serena Hotel and toured London and Djibouti. The band’s discography includes "Byonna Mbimanyi" (1996), "Topapa" (2002), and two 2009 albums: "Wulira Ate Yiga" and "Going Strong." Tony’s rich legacy in Ugandan live music endured until his passing at age 80.
