A towering figure in Southern African music, Tshepo Tshola built a career around a deep baritone tone that became central to Afro-jazz and soul across the region.
His first steps into professional music began in Lesotho in the 1970s with groups like Lesotho Blue Diamonds, Anti Antiques, and Uhuru, where he gained experience performing across borders. A key turning point came when he joined Sankomota, a band that fused Afro-jazz, rock, and traditional influences. As lead vocalist, he became the emotional centre of the group.
In the 1990s, he moved into solo work with albums such as "The Village Pope" (1994) and "New Dawn" (2001), expanding into soul and gospel-influenced styles.
He later collaborated with artists across generations and across Africa before passing away on 15 July 2021 due to COVID-19 complications in Lesotho, at the age of 67, leaving a major imprint on African music history.
