Vusi Sidney Mahlasela Ka Zwane, widely known as Vusi Mahlasela and nicknamed “The Voice,” is one of South Africa’s most revered singer-songwriters, poets, and activists. Born in Pretoria and raised in Mamelodi, he grew up during apartheid, experiences that shaped his artistic vision. Raised largely by his grandmother, Mahlasela absorbed the music and storytelling of her shebeen, later teaching himself guitar with improvised materials and writing songs reflecting community struggles and hope.
His debut album, "When You Come Back," became an anthem for returning exiles and led to his performance at Nelson Mandela’s 1994 inauguration. Over his career, albums like Wisdom of Forgiveness, Silang Mabele, Guiding Star, and Say Africa highlight his socially conscious storytelling.
Mahlasela has performed with Sting, Paul Simon, Dave Matthews, and Ladysmith Black Mambazo, earning multiple SAMAs, a Lifetime Achievement Award, and the Order of Ikhamanga (Silver). As a 46664 campaign ambassador.
