BioFormed in 1979, Amampondo is a South African percussion ensemble renowned for their fusion of traditional Xhosa music with jazz, funk, and rock influences. Their breakthrough came at Nelson Mandela's 70th birthday event at Wembley in 1988, propelling them to international acclaim. Despite facing various challenges, Amampondo's determination led to fruitful collaborations with Donald Graham, the owner of Claremont Records, and Archbishop Desmond Tutu on the album "Give Praise Where Praise Is Deserved." In 1994, their talent captured the interest of Robert Trunz, resulting in a recording contract with M.E.L.T. 2000. A pivotal moment arrived with the release of "Drums for Tomorrow," produced by Cameroonian drummer Bruce Wassy. Amampondo's enduring commitment to preserving South African culture and sharing it globally defines their remarkable legacy.
