BioFormed in Pretoria in 2005, Desmond & the Tutus are titans of the South African indie-rock scene. The band consists of brothers Shane (vocals) and Craig Durrant (drums), alongside guitarist Douglas Bower and bassist Nicholas Preen. They are celebrated for their "kwela-punk" sound a vibrant fusion of indie-rock energy and traditional South African rhythmic influences. The band gained international traction early on, notably in Japan, following the success of their debut album “Tuckshop,” (2008). However, they reached peak commercial success with their 2015 album, “Enjoy Yourself,” which won the SAMA for Best Rock Album. This record produced the massive hit "Pretoria Girls," a song that became a national anthem for the alternative scene. Beyond the music, they are known for their quirky, DIY aesthetic and humorous music videos. Despite their cheeky name they famously received a letter of approval from the late Archbishop Desmond Tutu cementing their place as South African icons.
