BioFreshlyground is a South African Afro-fusion group formed in 2002 in Cape Town by musicians from South Africa, Mozambique, and Zimbabwe. The founding members included Zolani Mahola (lead vocals), Simon Attwell (flute and mbira), Kyla-Rose Smith, Peter Cohen, Julio Sigauque, Josh Hawks, and Lara Kruger. Known for African rhythms with pop, jazz, and folk influences, the band gained early success with their albums Jika Jika (2003) and Nomvula (2004), which featured popular songs like “Doo Be Doo” and “I’d Like.” Their global breakthrough came in 2010 when they collaborated with Shakira on “Waka Waka (This Time for Africa),” the official anthem of the 2010 FIFA World Cup. Freshlyground has since received major recognition, including the MTV Europe Music Award for Best African Act and multiple South African Music Awards.
