BioHallelujah Chicken Run Band was formed in 1972 in Zimbabwe (then Rhodesia), by a trumpeter Daram Karanga to entertain the whites at the copper mines. The band later made its music accessible to the other mine workers by translating the arrangements of notes from electric guitars to traditional Shona music. With this step, the band successfully popularized the chimurenga genre, a blend of electric guitars and indigenous rhythms that became a symbol of the struggle for independence from the British colonial regime. The band got their big break after winning a national music competition organized by the South African label Teal in 1974 and got the attention of renowned producer Crispen Matema then, a record label sign-on. Between 1974 and 1975, the band released its hit songs "Ngoma Yarira" and "Murembo," leading to eight gold records. Hallelujah Chicken Run Band revolutionized Zimbabwean popular music, and their influences can still be heard in contemporary Zimbabwean music.
