BioIn 1972, Hedzoleh Soundz formed in Accra, Ghana, blending traditional African music with Western jazz and rock. Created by producer Faisal Helwani, the band aimed to craft a unique musical identity rooted in Akan and Ewe traditions, using authentic African-made percussion. After recording two singles in 1972, Lash Laryea, the band's leader, left and was replaced by Stanley Kwesi Todd. Their debut album, "Hedzoleh," was released in 1973. Fela Kuti introduced South African trumpeter Hugh Masekela to the band, resulting in a successful collaboration and the album "Masekela: Introducing Hedzoleh Sounds." More albums followed, but the group disbanded after a financial dispute with Masekela after an American tour.
