BioEstablished in 1905, the Ikwani Safaa Musical Club, also known as "Malindi," stands as Zanzibar's oldest Taraab orchestra. Founded in response to the Sultan's initiative to foster recreational associations on the island, the group got its name, meaning "brothers who love one another," which reflects the club's egalitarian and supportive objectives. Over a century since its inception, Ikwani Safaa Musical Club has played a pivotal role in shaping Zanzibari music, with their cassettes dominating trade shops. Following the 1964 revolution, the club underwent a name change, now identified as Malindi Musical Club, while still occasionally reverting to its original group name.
