BioThe Jamhuri Jazz Band originated in the late 1950s as the Nyamwezi Jazz Band in Tanga, Tanzania. In 1966, the band underwent a name change, becoming the Jamhuri Jazz Band due to concerns about tribalism associated with the term "Nyamwezi." Throughout the early 1970s, the band played a role in popularizing the Congolese Rumba sound across East Africa. Joesph Bagabuje served as the band's manager and financer. Notable members of the Jamhuri Jazz Band include John Kijiko, Wilson Kinyonga, and George Kinyonga.
