BioJurassic 5 is a Los Angeles alternative hip-hop collective composed of rappers Chali 2na (Charles Stewart), Akil (Dante Givens), Zaakir (Courtenay Henderson), and Marc 7 (Marc Stuart), alongside DJs DJ Nu-Mark (Mark Potsic) and Cut Chemist (Lucas MacFadden). Emerging from the underground hip-hop scene, the group distinguished itself from mainstream gangsta rap through an emphasis on lyricism, group harmony, wordplay, and live DJ performance.
The collective released music through Quannum Projects and became closely associated with the backpack and alternative hip-hop movements of the late 1990s and early 2000s. Turntables and scratching were central to their sound, with DJ Nu-Mark and Cut Chemist providing a dynamic rhythmic foundation.
Their catalog includes “Quality Control,” “Power in Numbers,” “Feedback,” and the Quannum Projects compilation “Quannum Spectrum.” Jurassic 5 received Grammy nominations for “What’s Golden” and “Work It Out,” and their collaborative MC-and-DJ approach remains influential within alternative hip-hop culture.
