BioMezcla is a Cuban band formed in 1985 by guitarist Pablo Menéndez, an Oakland native and son of blues singer Barbara Dane. At 14, he moved to Cuba, where he studied at the National School of Arts and worked with artists like Silvio Rodríguez through the Grupo de Experimentación Sonora del ICAIC. Under his leadership, Mezcla became known for its unique fusion of Afro-Cuban rhythms, jazz, rock, blues, and Yoruba influences. Mezcla, meaning "mixture," reflects this musical blend. Their style drew praise from Carlos Santana, who called them “the cleanest, freshest water.” The band has released albums like Akimba! and I'll See You in C-U-B-A, and has performed at major festivals across Cuba, Europe, Latin America, and the U.S. In the 1990s, they made history as the first modern Cuban band to tour the U.S., helping open cultural doors through their music.
