BioMonoMono was an African all-men band that performed Afro-rock. They were formed in Lagos, Nigeria, in 1971 by Joni Haastrup (lead vocals, keyboards), Babá Ken Okulolo (bass, vocal), and Danjuma "Jimi Lee" Adamu (guitars, vocals). Other members included Friday Jumbo and Candido Obajimi. MonoMono's first album, "Give the Beggar a Chance" (1972), was a critical and commercial success. The album was praised for fusing traditional Nigerian music with Western rock and soul influences. "Monomono" means lightning in Yoruba. Their music combined Afropop, soul, and British rock, delivered in a jam format, and the band's sound was influenced by sources like Fela Kuti, Jimi Hendrix, and the Beatles. Although MonoMono disbanded in 1975, they are considered the pioneers of Afro-rock music and have paved the way for future generations of African musicians.
