BioOrchestra Baobab is a Senegalese band established in 1970, now led by Thierno Koité. They served as the house band of the Baobab Club in Dakar and were well known for their unique fusion of musical styles, including son cubano, Wolof music, and some influence from Mande traditions. In later years, Thierno Koité assumed leadership of the band. Their early recordings were released under the name Orchestre Saf Mounadem, featured on a split album alongside Orchestre Laye Thiam, another group comprised of former Star Band members. The band experienced their first breakup in 1987 but reformed in 2001, making a triumphant return to the music scene. Their reconstituted ensemble received recognition, winning the award for Best African Artists and the Critics' Choice Award at the 2003 BBC Radio 3 World Music Awards. This accolade highlighted their enduring influence and musical prowess.
