BioThe Peacocks Guitar Band was a popular Nigerian highlife music group founded in the early 1970s by Bob Allen (with stage moniker Raphael Amarabem), a former sideman in Rex Lawson's Mayors Band of Nigeria. The band's music was heavily influenced by Ghanaian music and featured a unique blend of guitar-based highlife with elements of funk, jazz, and rock. They recorded in various languages, including English, Efik, Ewe, and Igbo, which enhanced their cosmopolitan appeal. The band's biggest hits were "Sambola Mama" and ""Abiriwa" which included the ever-green "Eddie Quansah". Sambola Mama became a highlife genre classic and was covered by a splinter group, the Skylarks International Band. The band dissolved in the late 1970s but was reformed in 1981 by Amarabem and continued to perform, recording at least one LP under the name "Revived Peacocks." The band maintained a loyal following, cementing their place in the history of Nigerian highlife music.
