BioPengaudzoke (meaning "dawn" or "new beginning" in Shona) was a Zimbabwean sungura music group formed in 1985 by two brothers, Daiton and Josphat Somanje. Their infectious blend of traditional rhythms and modern instrumentation quickly captured the hearts of Zimbabweans and established them as one of the country's most popular bands. Pengaudzoke's early singles, such as "Kwatakabva kure nenhamo" and "Munofamba Muchinditaura," were instant hits, propelling them to national stardom. Their music often addressed social and political issues, resonating deeply with audiences facing the challenges of post-colonial Zimbabwe. The group released numerous successful albums throughout the 1990s, solidifying their place as sungura legends. However, in 2002, the Somanje brothers fell out, leading to their split and the formation of separate bands. Despite the split, Pengaudzoke's legacy remains. Their music continues to be enjoyed by generations of Zimbabweans, and their influence is undeniable in the contemporary sungura scene.
